NEW PRODUCT INFORMATION ON MIRKA GOLD DISCS
Please note that our stocks of the 6-hole Gold Mirka Disc
will shortly be depleted and we will be replacing them with the
new 7-hole Gold Mirka Disc.
The new 7-hole disc further prevents clogging in the centre
of the disc and increases the lifespan of the disc as a result.
There is no change in the price of each disc which means
therefore that the lifespan of the disc is increased and its
effective cost is reduced.

EXCITING NEWS
FROM BULLDOG ABRASIVES
SOUTHERN AFRICA ( B A S A )
BASA has come a long way since its inception in 1997.
Initially the company was formed to acquire the agency for
Mirka abrasives for Sub Saharan Africa. The company
subsequently developed a comprehensive range of quality
accessories which together with its superior technical back
up and after sales support has seen it grow into the leading
supplier of coated abrasives and allied accessories to the
automotive refinishing industry and it is fast becoming a
force in the woodworking, industrial, DIY and composites
industries.

RECENT APPOINTMENT AS OFFICIAL SUPPLIER TO THE MAROUNS/INTERCITY GROUP
For many years BASA supplied the automotive industry via a
network of smaller independent distributors with whom we
have developed strong ties and a mutual long standing
loyalty and trust.
More recently and for some five years now BASA has been
privileged to have been the official abrasives supplier to
BASF in Southern Africa. BASF recently acquired the MAB Group significantly expanding its already prominent position in the automotive refinishing industry.
It is indeed a feather in our cap and a great privilege to have
recently concluded an agreement with another leading
distributor to the automotive refinishing industry, The
Marouns/Intercity Group, appointing us as their official
supplier of abrasives and allied products. With their support
we will become the leading supplier of abrasives and
accessories to the automotive refinishing industry an
achievement of which we are extremely proud and a
position we intend to use to add ongoing value to the
industry through the establishment of a centre for training
and development which will provide skills for the upliftment of unskilled laborers and will also provide essential ongoing training for industry employees.

LAUNCH OF OUR TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
The construction of our training and development centre is
well under way. We anticipate that it will be completed and
launched by the end of February 2009.
The centre will be one of a kind in our industry in Africa
and possibly in the world. It is being established primarily to
equip unskilled laborers with skills to enable them to seek
employment in any of the automotive, industrial,
woodworking or DIY industries. It will provide them with a
real opportunity to find gainful employment and contribute
to the Southern African economy.
There will be a unique theory training room looking on to a
spray both. The room is designed to accom-modate 24 trainees
at a time who will each receive weeks of comprehensive
training. The centre will also be equipped with state of the
art audio visual tech-nology and equipment to ensure that
the trainees receive exceptional instruction, education and on
the job training.
The centre will also have a canteen to cater for the trainees
and will be fully air conditioned to ensure that they are
bodily and mentally at their peak so they maximize their
knowledge intake.
Our instructors will be highly experienced hands on people
who will not only impart their technical and hands on skills
but will also provide the trainees with specific knowledge for
all of the products we supply.
Each of our major suppliers will have its own display booth
with its entire range of products on display. The booths will
each have televisions and digital video facilities to run
educational programs on our products.
Naturally the centre will be extremely useful for both
existing and new distributors and end users and will ensure
they are using our entire product range optimally and are
aware of all products in our range.
The centre will be approved and endorsed by the relevant
Government educational and training auth-orities so that the
courses receive official recognition and qualify for training
grants for employers who send their staff for training.
The cost of building the 1200 square meter training facility is
significant and our final cost estimate is between R4 and R5
million. We have attached an artist’s impression of what the
training centre will look like when complete.
The monthly costs of running the centre will also be significant
bearing in mind the cost of the rental, salaries of instructors,
energy, materials, aintenance, catering, upkeep etc.
The long term benefits will however be significant for all
and to the future of the industry. By equipping otherwise
unemployed people with skills to enable them to earn a
living and feed their families we will also help to prevent a
shortage of skills in the industry. We will naturally assist both
trainees to find employment and distributors and end users
to source specifically trained employees.
The centre will also be available by pre-arrangement for our
distributors and customers to use to host conferences.

NEW PRODUCT INFORMATION ON MIRKA POLARSTAR
As you would expect from a world leader in abrasives technology,
Mirka Polarstar is not your average sanding disc. It has been
specifically developed to efficiently tackle the latest demanding
coatings applications and uses a polyester film backing material
(in contrast to paper) to create a more flexible and much
smoother abrasive surface. As a result, Polarstar produces a
finer, more consistent surface finish more quickly and, because
it also has excellent resistance to clogging, it lasts longer, too.
• Outstanding performance on demanding applications such
as hard tooling gel coats and the latest scratch resistant
automotive clearcoats.
• Manufactured using Mirka’s unique, environmentally friendly
solvent-free coating system.
• Unique abrasive material resists clogging and delivers long
lasting performance.
• Designed for optimum performance on both wet and dry
sanding.
• Excellent durability – retains its high performance sanding
properties for far longer, especially on harder applications.
POLARSTAR RANGE
Another major advantage is the
versatility of the range. With grades covering P800, P1000,P1200
and P1500, Polarstar is the ideal solution for a wide variety of
tasks from paint rectification (P1200 and P1500) through to the
surface conditioning of primer fillers and the rectification of
tooling gel coats (P800) in the marine and automotive sectors.

AUTONET ™ FROM MIRKA
Why dry sand when you can use ultra-efficient Mirka
net sanding?
Specially developed to satisfy the unique demands of the
automotive refinish industry, Mirka Autonet is the fast, efficient
and cost effective abrasive technology that revolutionises the
sanding process.
The Autonet secret Mirka’s innovative ‘net’ sanding concept
is unlike any other. The patented construction consists of a
dense network of polyamide fabric threads onto which the
abrasive grit is bonded. This open weave, net structure means
that no dust particle is more than 0.5mm from a dust extraction
hole. The result is phenomenal dust extraction across the entire
abrasive surface and virtually dust-free sanding!
Net sanding has already been hugely successful in the Mirka
Abranet range of abrasive products. Now the technology has
been focused on providing Autonet with performance
characteristics ideally suited to the automotive refinishing sector. |
 |
Autonet™
clever construction, many advantages
• True dust-free sanding The exceptional dust extraction ability
of Autonet has to be seen to be believed. Tests have shown
that Autonet produces a miniscule amount of dust compared
to conventional dry sanding technology with extraction.
• Eliminates clogging and pilling Radically reducing the amount
of dust means it can no longer collect in lumps on the
abrasive surface. Therefore, Autonet eliminates the frustrating
problem of dust clogging the abrasive and creating pills
which cause defects in the sanding surface.
• Cleaner and healthier working environment Autonet is so
efficient at removing potentially dangerous sanding dust
it minimises dust contamination in the workplace and
creates a far healthier environment for everyone.
• Long life-span with the abrasive surface constantly kept
dust free, Autonet retains its original aggressive sanding
performance for far longer resulting in fewer abrasives
being needed for a given job.
• Visual control since dust is continuously being sucked away
it’s always possible to see exactly what is happening at the
sanding surface. This gives the user greater control over
the job and avoids problems such as over sanding.
A versatile range to suit any application
Autonet is available in a range of abrasive grits that allows
users to benefit across a full spectrum of automotive refinish
industry applications.
• Grits P80 to P180 are ideal for filler sanding and removal
of substrate down to bare metal with optimal fast cut
characteristics, excellent visual control and long-lasting
durability.
• Grits P180 to P320 are ideal for surface preparation and
feathering of repair edges. They provide a fast cut with an
even, uniform sanding pattern, as well as excellent visual
control and long-lasting durability.
• Grits P320 to P800 are ideal for primer sanding as well as
the`keying’ of all surfaces including the latest high tech
top coats and clear coats. They offer a particularly long
lifespan when sanding new low VOC primers.
